Wholesale vs Retail Coffee Pricing in NZ — What You're Actually Paying

If you've ever looked at the price per kilogram on a supermarket bag of coffee versus a wholesale quote, the gap can seem hard to explain. Here's what's actually going on.

What you're paying for with retail coffee

Retail coffee pricing carries a lot of cost that has nothing to do with the beans. There's the packaging — typically a fully branded, resealable bag with a valve, which costs significantly more than a plain alternative. There's the retailer margin, which usually sits somewhere between 40–60% on top of the wholesale price they paid. There's the logistics of getting small quantities onto shelves and keeping them there. And there's the marketing spend behind the brand itself.

None of that makes the coffee taste better.

What wholesale pricing removes

When you buy wholesale from an online roastery, most of those costs disappear. There's no retailer margin. The packaging is functional rather than decorative. There's no rep on commission, no account setup fee, no minimum spend locked into a contract. You're paying for the coffee and the roasting — that's it.

What wholesale pricing doesn't compromise on

The beans are the same. A wholesale roastery buying quality green coffee and roasting it well produces the same cup quality as a premium retail brand. The difference is in the margin structure, not the product.

At wholesalecoffee.nz, we roast to order regardless of quantity. A 6kg order gets the same freshness as a 60kg one. There's no warehouse stock sitting around losing flavour — your beans are roasted within a week of your order being placed.

Is it worth switching?

If you're running a café and buying coffee at retail prices, the maths usually works out significantly in favour of switching. Even modest weekly volumes add up to thousands of dollars a year in margin that's sitting with a retailer rather than in your pocket.
